OST : Sleepwalking Through The Mekong (by Dengue Fever, 2009)

"During the 60's and early 70's, as the war in Vietnam threatened its borders, a new music scene emerged in Cambodia that took Western rock and roll and stood it on its head - creating a sound like no other.
Cambodian musicians crafted this sound from the various rock music styles sweeping across America and England, adding the unique melodies and hypnotic rhythms of their traditional music. The beautiful singing of the renowned female vocalists became the final touch that made this mix so enticing.
As the peasant Khmer Rouge army closed in on the capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodian rock and rollers played at rooftop parties while bombs ignited the evening sky. After taking over the country on April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge began one of the most brutal genocides in history, killing 2 million people - 1/4 of the Cambodian population. Intellectuals, artists and musicians were murdered simply for their status. Only a few miraculously survived to tell their story"cambodianrock.com

Dengue Fever has helped revive this tradition in a psychedelic way since 2001. After the brilliant "Venus on Earth" (M80-Real World Records, 2008), taking advantage of the trip to the Khmer capital, Phnom Penh during the Bon Om Thook water festival in 2005, they filmed a rockumentary telling some Cambodian rock story.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but the soundtrack is trippin' amazing! Some of the best Cambodian rock songs included.

Or it is an orange trip? [RS] [MF]

VA : Rare & Bizarre 4

compiled by me.

I'm pleased to introduce you to my new comp... But first of all, allow me to say something...

These last years, I've been discovering and collecting a lot of music –any kind of music– almost everything from the net –but also my father's records and some purchase– where I've delighted with lots of shares from -mainly- all of you. I can't describe how exciting was for me to discover all of those rare stuff. Now, I'm addicted to Piccionis and Morricones, Libraries and Soundtracks, and I want to thank you all of your shared material. OST : Blade Runner 'Esper Edition' (by Vangelis)

Thanks to Blade Runner Soundtracks blog, I discovered this awesome classic bootleg created in 2003 by Esper Productions.

These are the statements of the Esper people:

The "Esper Edition" was made by two Vangelis/BR fans. Both of us would like to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. The intention of this private release was to give "our take" or interpretation of what the Blade Runner soundtrack should be...We made a total of ten original copies: five for each of us. We then distributed them to friends in the Vangelis circle...The "Esper Edition" has surprisingly become "stuff of legend" in many Blade Runner circles‚ mentioned on many webpages all over the internet...We did it because we were sick of so many BR bootlegs floating around that never "got it right" in terms of chronology‚ or thoroughness. They all had something unique to them‚ but there were always oversights. So‚ like taking pieces from a puzzle‚ we decided to simply "cut and paste" from all the exiting releases....We originally wanted to make the discs just for our enjoyment‚ but we thought it would be neat to come up with artwork and make it a "private release" for our friends...by fans for fans, not money.

Taken from vangelis-rarities.com where you can read the entire statement.

Lovely music for a lovely film. One of the greatest ever made. I'm sure you'll agree with me. Let's take a listen.

OST : Girl with a Pearl Earring (by Alexandre Desplat, 2003)

This is one of my favourite soundtracks from this decade. Actually, first I heard the soundtrack and after a time I watched the movie. If you have not seen it, doesn't matter, it's forgettable and unnecessary, because the music is so oneiric... Sometimes it can be sweet and lovely, and sometimes it can be dark and eery. Composed by Alexandre Desplat, it has a lot of similarity with the Philip Glass' scores. Mysteriously beautiful and touchingly intriguing, it is an awesome score I highly recommend.

Tracklist:

1. Girl With a Pearl Earring (Main Theme)
2. Griet's Theme
3. A New Life
4. The Master's House
5. Camera Obscura
6. The Birth Feast
7. Cornelia
8. Vermeer's Studio
9. Winter Nights
10. Van Ruijven
11. Home
12. Colours In The Clouds
13. The Master Is Painting
14. By The Canal With Pieter
15. Catharina's Pearls
16. Colours In The Clouds (Strings)
17. Girl With a Pearl Earring (Reprise)
18. Silence and Light (Piano Solo)
19. Griet's Theme (Reprise)
20. Griet Remembers

Forget about the movie, just listen to the music!

VA : Rare Melancholy

Compiled by raremarc

The Rare series continues. Because of my obsession to compile I've made this one for alone listeners when you are in calm and reflexive moment or when you are in disaffection. Sometimes I ask myself If we feel sad because of sadness and then we listen to sad music or the other way, we feel sad because of listening sad music. Whatever, sometimes we need to introspection for any reason and melancholy is the most favourable feeling to stop and look into yourself. If you miss your lo(a)st lover or you wanna find the peace without the –sometimes uncomfortable– silence, play this record and blow your mind.

Sven Libaek - Solar Flares, 1974

This album is so beautiful. Can find some elements of easy listening and space age pop with a pretty funky grooves in some track: Destination Omega 3 or Quasars. The best of the album is the self named Solar Flares, space bossa nova with an electric guitar solo and synthesizer, amazing! Meteoric Rain and Conversations with Hal are great too. One day a friend of mine who discovered this composer via last.fm asked me - is this Air, the french band? and now I think he was not so far to defining its style. It's like a retro Moon Safari, without vocals.

1, Solar Flares
2, Stella Maris
3, Lift Off
4, Destination Omega 3
5, Conversations with Hal
6, No Flowers On Venus
7, Quasars

VA : Rare & Bizarre 3

Compiled and designed by me.

Maybe you can think a third part could be too much. Well, I have to say you that it's not the last one. But you also must know that I made it with all my touch and care. Then, I believe it's better than the previous ones. In this volume I tried to put the songs most difficult to find, although, not for that reason, less good. Indeed, they're very good! Tell me but, when you hear Honkey Tonk, Tropicando, I Like it Cool or Dancing Drums. And finally, I put for once and for all my favourite song by Morricone: Metti Una Sera a Cena with the most precious hummer woman in the music history Edda Dell'orso (we love her). I hope you like it, too.

1, Lee Gagnon - Joie
2, Bill Doggett - Honkey Tonk
3, Eddie Warner - Come
4, Los Brasilios - No Te Esconde

OST : Dracula

I've been always fascinated by Dracula, since I was a child. I like everything related to his figure ...except the blood. When I was a child I imagine myself living eternaly in a big castle in the top of a green hill with a lot of beautiful virgins around me...

Well, but today the most important thing is the music, like everyday, so...

In 1897 Bram Stoker published Dracula, a history of vampire inspired for a real emperator called Vlad 'Tepes' Draculea (The Impaler) who regned in Velaquia, Rumania since 1448 to 1476 and impaled more than 20.000 persons. Another book he readed 20 years before and also inspired to write his best-seller was Carmilla from Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu published in 1871.

OST : Dracula
composed by Philip Glass and performed by the Kronos Quartet in 1999

The Bela Lugosi's classic from 1931 directed by Tod Browning did not have any film score, the only music you can heard were Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Wagner's Die Meistersinger. And who-know-why Philip Glass composed in 1999 a perfect minimal strings score for the film.

I'm Dracula!

OST : The Virgin Suicides

Sofia Coppola, the spoiled girl of daddy Coppola, presented in Cannes Festival in 1999 her debut film based in a novel of Jeffrey Eugenides. The movie was a good adaptation and a great obscure drama. I confess it's one of my favourites films (and soundtracks sure). But the best is the music, divided in two albums: one for the original film score composed by french band Air, and another for the soundtrack with a various artists compilation appeared in the movie. Both are really good, but I have special affection of Air's score beacause it was a present from a good friend of mine. Anyway, I recommend the both listenings hardly ...in this order:

The Virgin Suicides Film Score
composed by Air

1, Playground Love (Sung by Gordon Tracks)
2, Clouds Up
3, Bathroom Girl
4, Cemetary Party
5, Dark Messages
6, The Word 'Hurricane'
7, Dirty Trip
8, Highschool Lover (Theme from "The Virgin Suicides")
9, Afternoon Sister
10, Ghost Song
11, Empty House
12, Dead Bodies Killer piano-and-drums-with-synthetic-chorus funky pregressive track!
13, Suicide Underground

Urusei Yatsura - We are Yatsura, 1996

Hello again blog-addicts! I know this album is not exactly what I usually post.. but this days I've listened to it once again and I wanted to share with you and remainds it. I love this debut album from scotish band Urusei Yatsura (now called only Yatsura because copyright problems with the anime comic of the same name) because it was one of my first albums of indie music I heard and I liked too. A minor classic-masterpiece of Lo-Fi music, it sounds like 'Slanted & Enchanted' from Pavement, Dinosaur Jr or Pixies. Very recommended!

But if you prefer something softer to hear in this cold winter nights...you'll have to wait for the next post :)

Tracklist:

1, Siamese
2, First Day On A New Planet
3, Pow R. Ball
4, Kewpies Like Watermelon
5, Phasers On Stun/Sola Kola
6, Black Hole Love
7, Velvy Bood
8, Plastic Ashtray
9, Death 2 Everyone
10, Pachinko
11, (Untitled)
12, Kernel
13, Road Song

Do love Yatsura!
